West Homewood
Award Winning Schools - Beautiful Parks - Best Neighbors Around
The City of Homewood and the Homewood Parks & Recreation Board will celebrate the 4th of July in Downtown Homewood. Two blocks of 18th Street South & One block of 29th Ave South will be blocked for pedestrian traffic in Downtown Homewood to make way for rides and attractions. Our event opens to the general public at 5:00pm. There will be a combination of inflatables/rides placed in the streets that will appeal to children of all ages. A DJ will provide music and interactive activities for the patrons at the event. Downtown Homewood is one of the best locations in the entire metro Birmingham area to view the “Thunder on the Mountain” fireworks show from Vulcan Park ( http://visitvulcan.com/july-4th-fireworks/ ). All of our activities will end at the beginning of the fireworks display.
There is no admission charge to enter the downtown event area but to ride and play on the attractions an unlimited attractions wristband ($10) must be purchased. A tent selling attractions wristband will be located near the intersection of 18th Street South and 29th Avenue South.

Streetfest is a West Homewood community tradition that is free to attend and geared for all ages. We'll have Oak Grove closed between Hall and Raleigh from 12-10pm, but the party from 4-9 will make it worth it. See you there!
We Love Homewood Day gets bigger every year. It's held over in Central Park and is an all day event. Head over to the Park's website for all the details:
http://www.homewoodparks.com/special-events/we-love-homewood-day/ Join the City's Mayor, Board of Landscape Design, Friends of Jemison Park, and other officials from both Mountain Brook and Homewood for the inaugural Shades Creek Fest at the National Bank of Commerce (813 Shades Creek Pkwy, Birmingham 35209). There will be fly fishing demonstrations in Jemison Park, the City's annual tree giveaway, live music, and nature demonstrations.
The race will start at 8am, but Oak Grove in front of Patriot Park will be closed prior to the race. If you plan on getting out that morning, plan your route/schedule accordingly.
Entry to the Salamander Festival is free and open to the general public. Activities include animal exhibits (real salamanders, fish, turtles, and more) with biologists and naturalists to answer questions. Also, nature crafts to make, educational displays representing different groups and live music by the Herb Trotman Band. There will be t-shirts and novelty items for sale and a chocolate fountain for which one can buy a plate of dippers.
Starting at 4:00 P.M. a presentation will begin with members of Friends of Shades Creek and a welcome by Homewood City officials, followed by awards and the story of the Homewood Spotted Salamander. Next Tuesday, we'll have two different opportunities to get more information on the Heart of Homewood Master Plan. My understanding is there will be a presentation and then a Q&A. The meeting is over at City Hall on the 2nd floor in the Council Chambers.
Lunch session: 12-1:30 Evening session: 5:30-7 If you don't feel like cooking tomorrow evening, you can try out one of the newest food trucks in Birmingham. Swamp Monster BBQ (logo above) will be in Forest Brook in the cul-de-sac of Delcris Court from 5:30-7:30. Dust off your favorite tailgate chair and make sure it still works before college football kicks off this weekend. Weather permitting, of course.
The next Ward 2 Town Hall will be held at the Homewood Church of Christ at the corner of Lakeshore and West Oxmoor at 6:30 on Thursday, August 17th. As always, it will be an informal event so feel free to drop in.
